  • WITH LOVE FROM AREQUIPA

    1 december 2011

    hi,

As you can see by the title, I am back with my feet on the ground in Peru. Arrived in Lima on November 18th this year. I will travel hopefully to Ecuador too to pick up my works I left behind in Loja in Ecuador in 2009. Of course I will see more of the places I wanted to visit in 2009 such as Chachapoyas, Nazca and hoepfully join a shaman in a ritual.

But there are two exhibitions in the making. The first one will be in the Condesuyo museum in Moquegua hopefully in March. The second one and most important one will be in Lima in the Escuela de Bellas Artes in June to July, before I fly back to England.

  • THE OPENING of GREEN MEN INT.

    6 oktober 2011

    Hi,

The vernissage has not been an immediate success, due to unforeseen 'accidents'. Although, the rector and two priests have apologized for having been unaware of the obstacles we had found on our way, the evening of the inauguration...

However, I managed to have a pleasant evening with some of the visitors who had planned to be there and those who stumbled upon the exhibit, like a Thai mother with her son, from the Thai restaurant, 2 blocks away.

Half of my works were left in the dark because six spots in one aisle had given up the ghost.

Hanging works in an ancient church like St Chad's is no sinecure. I could not or would not drill new holes in the walls, if it hadn't been for father Michael who in the last minute went to buy strong long nails that could fit in some of the cushioned panels in the aisles, most of my work would not have been up.

But the biggest disappointment was the press. Having shot at least 20 pics of me, nothing of the show was announced until father Michael, again, went to talk to the Star & Express local newspaper. I wondered if they hated my guts, because I had refused to take off a pre-Columbian woolen mask, which I was wearing for the photo shoot. I wore that mask to make the link of the Pre-Columbian and pagan heritage from around the world with the Green Man from Stafford.

So, I ended up in black and white on page 19 Monday , instead of the Wednesday, the day when everyone receives a free copy. If that was the reason, out of spite, because an artist didn't show his face ("We don't publish pictures of people without a face", the reporter, John, said, still trying to get to see my face) then this paper has a lot of growing up to do. There are other ways to promote an artist's ideas, rather than just sillily pose with my face and a painting behind or in my hands.

I do express my thanks to all those who helped me to make the most of it and in particular my friend Valerie for her patience and organisation skills.

Anyway, the exhibition continues until the end of this month.

    Cheers

    Alann

  • A NEW SHOW OF MINE IN WOLVERHAMPTON UK

    27 juli 2011

    Hi there,

Having worked hard for 2 months on a new body of work of which I only have put on 2 on my site, I have found some original premises to show them...in Wolverhampton, at the Volte Galleries which was a former Railway station of the Victorian era.

For 2 years curator and arts graduate from the Wolverhampton Arts College, Mrs. Antoinette, rented that beautiful building and now she will put an end to end as she will be moving to Berlin soon.

It starts this Friday 29th at 6 pm at the lower level station (behind the New Station) and will be on for 3 days only. I have works ther from 1995 up to 2011. Please do come over if you are in the area. Thanks!

    Yours

    Alann

  • VISITING MY DAD'S LEGACY

    25 mei 2011

My dad passed away on 25 November last year, while I was teaching in Phnom Penh. The series on the dead, spirits, and reincarnations, are proving to be cathartic.

Scetches were made by me in a hotel room in PP around that period when also 350 people died on th Koh Pich  (Diamond Bridge) during the Boat Races festival, known as Pchum Ben. Now they are being transferred one by one onto canvas.

My relationship with my dad has been very shaky at times when I needed most of mental support. We said goodbye last year at the nursing home and on the phone later 2 weeks before he died.

Mystics don't use the word dying, thye say he reincarnated. So do the Buddhists. Various congregations of monks went and sat by the river to pray for the many missing people, bodies, and help their souls, who they believed needed the right and timely transition.

I hope my dad's transition was OK too, and that he may like the painting I made. in which I have used parts of his imagery....her in this case a winter landscape.

I was the first pink branch of the family and he had a hard time accepting it.

  • BOYS, MEN GET OVER IT!!!

    10 mei 2011

door Alann De Vuyst op maandag 9 mei 2011 om 11:28

Everytime I read comments denigrating a man’s male anatomy I cringe. Those comments show of what harm the feminist movemement has done to the male self image. While women can go for boobjobs and show off a nice cleavage men are denied to show off what their nature is. We teach our boys to hide anything that is masculine a body and be ashamed of it. The beauty of males is hidden in lousy baggy trousers which makes the male even more unattractive. The women have taken shorts away from us men and boys, the tights of the 16th century too. It’s time that men take back what was theirs, but for that too happen they need to regain their self value and that of their own bodies. Once unisex fashion was invented, women could wear trousers and shorts and they took it away from us, to the point where men wearing shorts as they used in the 70s are now called gay!!!!

Boys get over it. Read the book written by Germaine Greer “The Boy”, and get back to the roots of Greek eros, where men and boys were allowed and proud to show off male anatomy. The feminists movement are guilty of creating the low self image a boy has of himself and his male anatomy showing off in speedos, etc. The USA prudes who invented the boxers to hide what we have. What’s wrong with showing off what we have? What’s wrong with showing off the male beauty a boy has. The only thing we see now from USA which has contaminated the rest of the world is baggy trousers, sagging trousers showing off a brand of undies, baggy hoodies (thank you Bronx Hip hop), making us hideous, mistaking for male machoness. Women give us back our shorts and tights and get lost. Long live the codpiece!!!

Just compare and tell me what is most esthetic and pleasing to the eye.

  • EGOS

    4 mei 2011

The opening of the EGOS exhibit (see my Exhibitions) was on Monday at 6 pm. Because most of the artists live in Italy there weren''t too many of them present. The curator Mr. Mirko (left), was there as was the gallery owner, and a handful of the artists which included me.

Because Monday was a bank holiday there weren''t any visitors either. But now the show is running in the posh heart of London and I hope we do well.

I took advantage of visiting the National Gallery and on Tuesday I went to see the Pre-Rafaelites on show in the V&A, which included some originals of Beardsly and an original photograph of Oscar Wilde. Well worth a visit and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

    cheers

  • ONE FOOT IN THE DOOR IN LONDON

    17 april 2011

I decided to submit my work here at the Shire Hall of Stafford, for a competition (I hate competitions since I don''''t consider art to be competition of race horses) which selected artists work for the celebration of the 21st anniversary of The Shire Hall.

We could bring in three works, which I did, and the jury was a one man show performed by famous Londoner artist Rob Ryan.
In these times of government cuts on the arts by this Cameron government I thought it was the only wise decision to make, provided of course that I was going to be selected with work. And I was. OK, so my first appearance with my art for the general public. It will go on show for five weeks.

Before that I will exhibit in London with Italians, smack in the centre of London.

For dates and location look at the exhibitions rubric.
I have bought myself a new easel and plenty of canvas, ready to paint my series of ghosts and others.

    Have a nice day!

  • BACK ON THE CHAINGANG

    3 april 2011

    Dear visitor,

At last some news from me; yes, never say never again. But I am back from Cambodia where I taught at one of the best Unis in Phnom Penh for about 9 months.

I came back with a determination to pick up the thread I left in Loja Ecuador in 2009.

I took a sabbatical of nearly 21 months. I questioned each and everytime if it was worth to contribute to the millions of images  spawned on this earth by so many artists and people on the net.
I realised when in trance that I had everything in my head already and I didn't feel the need to paint it anymore.

But blood crawls where it cannot walk, in so much that I could not stop creating (videos and digital stills) on my laptop when I had some energy left after teaching.

But the biggest change came in the form of a catharsis when my father died in November from a terminal disease. That same week of the 21 to the 25th 350 Cambodians were stampeded to death on a bridge with the mystical name of Diamond Bridge. They died suffocating, electrocuted on a beautiful bridge and the people in Phom Penh and beyond were afraid they would not pass over to the afterworld if they hadn't been helped by prayers from the monks.

I was rushed into a stream of imagery which nearly commanded me to paint about these crucial events in my life, there in Asia.

Paint program was my only tool in my small hotel room where I lived.

Now in England with new energy, I decided to make big canvases full of that spirit world which I had been drawn into in Bolivia, from 2005 onwards until now. Peru and Ecuador.

I get often visitations and have developed into a medium speaking different tongues when in trance, whether in Uk, Asia or South America, the spirits will never leave me anymore.

Art has come back as the microbe that had caught me at the age of 3.

I will soon show you some of my digital ideas and hopefully the big works too.

    Hasta la vista!

    Alann

  • MY DAY OF BIRTH

    30 maart 2010

Fifty-one years ago about quarter to or past eight am I left my mum's womb to be cast into a world I have not so readily embraced until this day.

Arent' we all struggling with everyday's reality? I heard that it is but a number, for another I am now on tram number 51, another track in my life, new times of reflection which things to choose on my path of development. I read a great deal of wise books this past year, one of them was called the Four Agreements by Miguel Ruiz on how to apply Toltec shamanic wisdom in our daily life to get back to the innocence we had in our first 2 years of our life.

Ohters were Seven Arrows (on the peace shields and chiefs of the Plains Indians from North America) and a Castaneda one known as The Teachings of Don Juan (2). I liked them all but applying them in my daily life seems easier when read than carried out to the letter.

It is about finding my new balance in my new lease of life. Right now I am torn between continents...where do I feel best and what will I do with my art in the future?

Will I create more once I am back on the road and left the UK or will I become a recluse?

  • GOOD LUCK CHARMS

    30 november 2009

I made or have made people to cast some of my tribal design in good luck charms in brass. Some time ago that was in India.

I was amazed by the craftsmanship of the sculptors in Mahabalipuram, a place by the sea near Chennai. Lots of Hindu deities carved out of rocks, and apparently divers have found that the site was much bigger than what we can see now.

Underwater is another extension of 100 meters into see of sculptures and palaces of what once was a village.

Anyway, I had made design of those tribal charms made on paper and had the carvers carryi it out in soap stone. This was the year 2000. I carried the original pieces to Nepal and had them cast in brass by a blacksmith. It took some perseverance to have him start the business. Only with and advance of some money, he agreed.

The man, who got his first down payment for the start of the production of a 100 pieces, i had 7 different designs. Next day he was supposed to start the work, but instead he spent the money on booze and didn't turn up. When he was back 2 days later, he started, it took him a week, and the very same day I had to leave Kathmandu he was again nowhere to be found, I had paid him the rest I owed him. His colleagues gave me what he had made, but he had also gone with the originals. I though, he is clever and will find some market to produce his own copies...I would never know would I?
Anyway this is the nice story behind the collection.

     I hope you enjoy them.

    Cheers

    Alann

  • MUNDO CHAMAN

    23 mei 2009

My show and perfomance called 'Mundo Chaman (Shaman world) en dubbed by the press as the exhibition of the "Indio Rojo" (Red Indian).
I had layers of clothes from all the countries where I lived and spent time with indigenous peoples, the colours predominantly red.

About 200 people gathered from all layers of society in Loja, artists, musicians, students, young and old had spread the word or heard it.

I thought no one woul dcome in time but for once they did and waited 20 minutes for me to make my big entree in red, the only drawback was audio errors, so my vdo clips could be shown but not be hear.

However no one complained and had all but praise for the performance and told me how deep they found my work.

  • ANOUNCEMENT OF MY SHOW IN DAILY LA HORA, IN ECUADOR

    20 mei 2009

  • EXHIBITION IN LOJA

    17 mei 2009

Yes, just when I thought it would never happen here, I got invited by the ministry of Culture in Loja city Ecuador, to exhibit.

As I started getting organised for it I faced my works I made during my last weeks in Peru and the ones I made here in Loja in February and got a jolt of energy and stimulus which prompted to add a few new ones.

That is...because I started painting again! At least for this show. I will probably leave all of my works in custody with a museum...

And I am quite happy with the result. You can see in FRESH a few new works, and I will add the others later. During the vernisage I will also show my video clips of my travels.

If you happen to travel through Loja, pop in!

    Cheers

  • SHOULD I STOP OR SHOULD GO ON?

    24 maart 2009

There comes a time when at some point one feels he has nothing more to say and fights to keep his mind going. I have arrived at that point and I ask myself 'should I stop or should I continue' creating?' (Sounds like The Clash).

Not that my mind has stopped creating. it never does, and ideas keep on surging. Sometimes when I have half opened up my eyes at dawn, but then I never write it down and half way through the day I have forgotten the whole idea.

I just read that scientists discovered that our brain is at it's peak at 22 and at 27 it starts deteriorating. Next week I am half a century old, after I read that I wondered how far mine has deteriorated.

But my drive has gone, I don't find the motivation any longer to sit in front of a canvas and do something on it. ('Do it ', Nike said).

Perhaps, because I think nobody is waiting for another painting of mine and I just thought of much art there is already out there. I thought of how much I craved freedom of not possessing anything and be able to wander the world without anything but a suitcase or backpack.

I looked at what i have done in my life and what i have created already. I have had a full life. I am tired of the idea that one has to compete to get the attention, that's what it all seems in the arts world. Competition, to have the latest scope, the latest hattrick before it becomes old hat, the newest idea, the latest shock, and I never was into competition in my life, as a matter of fact I hate it.

Now here I am, I have to teach English in a foreign country to survive as a painter. The teaching job is so intense that I have no energy left to think of something else or to do anything else.

My decision to do nothing for the moment has come from a feeling of déjà vu. I have seen the most overwhelming pictures in my head and I wonder why I should try to compete with my brain in getting as close to depicting it as my internal camera saw it. Impossible, every fraction of a second I saw something so perfect beyond imagination.

I blurted it out: Oh, my lord, how and why would ever want to paint again when I have these images right here in my head. What for? What's the use or point of it?

Perhaps that has triggered of the the delay in painting new works...I have done a few between last year September and  December this year, but they were only scetches from 2004 put into acrylic paint on canvas and paper, and the Gods knows how I hate to copy myself.

Let's admit it, I am questioning everything, me, life in general and mine, people, creation in itself...Is it a midlife crisis maybe...I hope I find an exit soon.  I would like to de-compress.
